SUMMARY:Helen Gillet w/ Sally Schaefer & Tyler Bagwell in the 9th Ward\, Buffalo\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Big Easy in Buffalo presents Helen Gillet live in the 9th Ward\, with special guests Sally Schaefer & Tyler Bagwell opening the show. \n7pm Doors\, 8pm Show \nTickets: General Admission Seated tickets\, $10 advance / $15 day of show\, can be purchased on TixR.com or in person at the Babeville Box Office (M-F 11a-5p) (in person: fee free cash sales\, 3% credit card fee) \nHelen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds\, texture\, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background\, New Orleans\, with its mix of cultures and musics\, seemed like a natural place to call home. She was born in Belgium\, raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11\, and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes\, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping\, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello\, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s\, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon\, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex\, and her own affecting originals\, like audience favorite “Julien\,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology. \nBuffalo-based acoustic folk duo Sally Schaefer (fiddle\, vocals) & Tyler Bagwell (guitar\, vocals) breathe fiery new life into old folk songs\, bluegrass standards\, classic country hits\, popular Americana numbers\, and a treasure trove of Celtic music. Sally is an ethnomusicologist and well-established musician around the Western New York area\, appearing with numerous bands representing an array of musical genres including Creek Bend bluegrass\, Buffalo Bluegrass Allstars\, and Celtic rock outfit McCarthyism. Tyler is a songwriter and historian with a vast repertoire of songs and stories. His original pieces are reflective of narrative folk writing styles melded with a fervent interest in local history. Find the duo’s new album\, Irish Songs & Tunes\, online via your favorite streaming platform\, or pick up a copy at the show. \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. It most certainly is Black American roots music and it is music born of the African American/Black and mixed race French speaking Creoles of South Louisiana. Simien is blessed with an extraordinary vocal talent and on- stage charisma. He expresses our deepest human emotions through the original instrument: The Voice. SUMMARY:John Papa Gros Band wsg Organ Fairchild - The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series
DESCRIPTION:John Papa Gros Band wsg. Organ Fairchild – The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA series\nThe Cave\nAugust 18\, 4pm doors\, 5pm show\n$20 advance\, $25 day-of\nhttps://www.showclix.com/event/john-papa-gros-band-24 \n“John “Papa” Gros is a bedrock New Orleans artist\, a keyboardist\, singer and songwriter who draws on funk\, rhythm & blues and Americana songcraft; he also knows his way around the Mardi Gras music repertoire about as well as anyone.” – Keith Spera The New Orleans Advocate \nBetween 2000 and 2013\, Gros led Papa Grows Funk\, a highly revered group that mixed hard-hitting funk grooves with often unpredictable jazz spontaneity. The band released six critically-acclaimed studio albums\, including Needle in the Groove\, which was co-produced by New Orleans legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee\, Allen Toussaint. The group’s weekly gigs at the world-famous Maple Leaf became a staple for both locals and tourists alike\, eventually leading to Gros touring in far off countries like Japan and Brazil. \nAfter Papa Grows Funk dissolved\, Gros briefly returned to sideman work\, playing organ for a series of all-star tributes to Dr. John and the Neville Brothers. The 2014 Dr. John tribute\, The Music Mojo of Dr. John\, was later released as a critically-acclaimed live album that featured Gros playing with Bruce Springsteen\, Mavis Staples\, Jason Isbell\, and John Fogerty. More importantly for Gros\, those tribute concerts allowed him to play alongside his two biggest influences: the Doctor and Art Neville\, both of whom passed in 2019. \nIn 2016\, Gros returned to the spotlight yet again with his second solo album River’s On Fire\, the much anticipated follow up to his 2004 debut Day’s End. Co-produced by Gros and Tracy Freeman (Harry Connick Jr\, Rebirth Brass Band\, Bonerama)\, the album’s fiery funk rock showed how Gros had matured as both a songwriter and bandleader. It firmly established Gros’ identity as a solo force. In 2020 Gros released Central City\, his third solo album. The album is a collection of classic New Orleans songs\, both new and old\, filtered through his decades of dedication to his craft. The album features Gros’ feel good originals alongside his takes on beloved songs by Allen Toussaint\, Lloyd Price\, and John Prine. \n“I’m walking in the same path [as Dr. John\, Allen Toussaint\, and Art Neville\,]” explains Gros. “I’ve been following them my whole life. Now\, they’re no longer in front of me. They’ve gotten off the path but the path is still very clear.” \nJam scene mainstays Joe Bellanti\, Corey Kertzie and Dave Ruch met in 1983 as members of Buffalo NY Grateful Dead cover band “Wild Knights\,” but it wasn’t until early 2020 that they wrote their first original music together\, this time as three-piece instrumental organ trio/funky jam band Organ Fairchild. Individually\, these veteran musicians have played music with (not in support of) Bob Weir\, Rob Wasserman\, Robbie Krieger (The Doors)\, Nels Cline\, Tony Rice\, moe.\, Oteil Burbridge\, Steve Kimock\, Keller Williams\, Strangefolk\, Gibb Droll\, Big Leg Emma\, Juggling Suns and more. But since 2020\, they’ve been joined together in the pursuit of groovy tunes and juicy jams in a high-powered organ trio format. \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. DESCRIPTION:The Rumble feat. Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. – The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series \nPart of the Borderland Music + Art Festival\nSeptember 13 – 15\, 2024 – The Rumble plays on Sept 15 \nhttps://www.tixr.com/groups/borderlandfestival/events/borderland-festival-2024-89339 \nOn Mardi Gras morning\, your eyes may feast on the intricate and elaborate beadwork of the Indians as they dance down the street\, but the first thing you’ll hear when they make their way toward you is the back line\, known as “the rumble”. Featuring six Grammy-nominated musicians\, The Rumble is more than just a band – it’s an opportunity to be immersed in a wholly unique facet of New Orleans culture. Composed of Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Golden Eagles\, trumpeter Aurélien Barnes\, trombonist José Maize Jr.\, bassist TJ Norris\, guitarist Ari Teitel\, keyboardist Andriu Yanovski\, and drummer Trenton O’Neal\, the group fuses iconic New Orleans funk in the vein of The Meters and The Neville Brothers – but updated\, modern and vibrant befitting the next generation – with electrifying brass and the singular visual splendor of the Black Masking carnival tradition. Their live show is a symphony of rich color and propulsive sound\, with each member sharing vocal duties and engaging the audience in the classic Mardi Gras Indian-style call-and-response chanting. The group pays homage to trailblazers like Wild Magnolias and Golden Eagles\, both of which featured the vocal stylings of Boudreaux’s father\, Monk Boudreaux. The Rumble continues the fight to preserve the legacies and traditions of the community for the next generation while bringing new layers of depth to their live performance. The Rumble provides audiences with not only a top-tier musical event\, but a chance to participate in a culture that\, while deeply rooted in centuries-old tradition\, is thriving and evolving through the active work of this next generation of bold and passionate culture-bearers. \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. He treats his shows like he treats his songs. He stretches things out and totally jams out making every night and half the time every song a bit different which adds to the entertainment and uniqueness of every night he plays.” – Splice Magazine \nTab Benoit is a Grammy nominated singer\, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues\, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way\, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards\, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He has recorded and/or performed with Junior Wells\, George Porter Jr\, Dr. John\, Willie Nelson\, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux\, Billy Joe Shaver\, Maria Muldaur\, James Cotton\, Cyril Neville\, Kenny Aronoff\, Allen Toussaint\, Kim Wilson\, Jimmy Thackery\, Charlie Musslewhite\, Kenny Neal\, Chris Layton\, Ivan Neville\, Jimmy Hall\, Jim Lauderdale\, Anders Osborne\, and Alvin Youngblood Hart to name a few. Tab just released his first album in 13 years\, “I Hear Thunder” and is touring in support of the release. \nJesse Dayton isn’t just an unsung hero of modern-day American music; he’s a towering figure in the realm of Outlaw Country\, a master storyteller who effortlessly blurs the boundaries between genres and disciplines. With a career spanning multiple decades\, Dayton has left an indelible mark as a chart-topping songwriter\, guitar virtuoso\, author\, frontman\, sideman\, producer\, and relentless road warrior. From his early days with the Road Kings\, where he fearlessly melded Texas Rockabilly and Country with the raw energy of Punk Rock\, Dayton has been a trailblazer. His innovative style not only earned him acclaim but also paved the way for collaborations with legends like Johnny Cash\, Waylon Jennings\, and Kris Kristofferson. Over the years\, Dayton’s collaborations have spanned a diverse array of artists\, from blues sensation Samantha Fish—his partner on the Grammy-nominated Death Wish Blues—to icons of country like Willie Nelson and Glenn Campbell\, rock rebels such as Guns ‘N Roses’ Duff McKagan and Glenn Danzig\, and even visionary horror filmmakers like Rob Zombie. Yet amidst this vast spectrum of work\, Dayton’s solo albums stand as a testament to his refusal to be confined by genre\, earning him recognition as a roots-rock renaissance man. \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. SUMMARY:Tab Benoit wsg Jesse Dayton - The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series at Town Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Tab Benoit “I Hear Thunder Tour” wsg Jesse Dayton\nThe Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series\nFriday December 6\nTown Ballroom\nDoors 7pm\, Show 8pm\nAges 12+\, Minors under 16 must be accompanied by a parent\nGovernment Issued ID Required\n$35 – $65\nhttps://www.etix.com/ticket/p/46254823/tab-benoit-the-big-easy-in-buffalo-nola-series-buffalo-town-ballroom-buffalony \n“Tab rarely plays the same show twice and eschews a standard setlist. Through The Big Easy in Buffalo thousands of students\, dozens of local bands\, and countless audience members in Western New York have been exposed to this unique American culture. SUMMARY:The Kevin Gordon Trio & The David Miller Trio
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presetns \nThe Kevin Gordon Trio & The David Miller Trio \nThursday\, June 12\, 2025 7pm \n$15ad($17.60w/online fee) or $20 door\n“He’s amazing.” –Jim Lauderdale \n“Dude’s a juke-joint professor emeritus”–Rolling Stone \nKevin Gordon’s Louisiana is a strange place. It’s a place where restless teens road trip\nto where the highway dead-ends at the Gulf of Mexico; a place where prisoners who are\nin for life compete in a rodeo while the town watches; where a character can get lost in\nthe humid afternoon and where religion may not signify hope; and where rivers\, never\nfar away\, carry secrets behind levees. “One of the things I like about it and am mystified\nby is that what passes for normal in Louisiana would not make the grade elsewhere\,” he\nsays. \nThe kicker? All of these postcards are based on true stories. It’s a place that he’s been\nexploring for twenty years now\, on the eve of the release of his astonishing new album\n“Tilt And Shine” on Crowville Media. It is work that has earned him fans like noted author\nand Elvis Presley biographer Peter Guralnick; New West Records artist Buddy Miller;\njournalist\, songwriter\, and Country Music Hall of Fame staffer Peter Cooper; Todd\nSnider; head of the Americana Music Association Jed Hilly; and Lucinda Williams\, with\nwhom Kevin dueted on the song “Down To The Well” (which was featured prominently on\nan Oxford American compilation). \nBefore you even hear his vivid lyrics\, you start feeling the sound of that ’56 Gibson ES-\n125 tuned down to open D\, often with the tremolo flowing like a river\, and an\nunstoppable groove distilled from swamp blues and Sun Records. His MFA from the\nUniversity of Iowa Writers’ Workshop allows him to capture it with a degree of precision. As the New\nYork Times put it in its headline of a feature on Kevin\, “A Musician Or A Poet? Yes to\nBoth.” \nKevin sums it up\, “There are so many stories in north Louisiana and it’s a place that\nnobody pays attention to. For me\, you can feel the arc of time passing there. I’m captivated by\nthe power of strong memories—those films that run continuously in your mind\, if you let\n‘em.” With “Tilt and Shine\,” those movies translate into rock n’roll poetry.

SUMMARY:John Papa Gros Band wsg. Critt's Juke Joint - The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series
DESCRIPTION:John Papa Gros Band wsg. Critt’s Juke Joint – The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA series\nThe Cave\nSaturday July 12\, 2pm doors\, 3pm show\n$20 advance\, $25 day-of\nhttps://www.showclix.com/event/-john-papa-gros-band-w-critt-s-juke-joint \n“John ‘Papa’ Gros is a bedrock New Orleans artist\, a keyboardist\, singer and songwriter who draws on funk\, rhythm & blues and Americana songcraft; he also knows his way around the Mardi Gras music repertoire about as well as anyone.” – Keith Spera The New Orleans Advocate \nBetween 2000 and 2013\, Gros led Papa Grows Funk\, a highly revered group that mixed hard-hitting funk grooves with often unpredictable jazz spontaneity. The album features Gros’ feel good originals alongside his takes on beloved songs by Allen Toussaint\, Lloyd Price\, and John Prine.\n“I’m walking in the same path [as Dr. John\, Allen Toussaint\, and Art Neville\,]” explains Gros. “I’ve been following them my whole life. Now\, they’re no longer in front of me. They’ve gotten off the path but the path is still very clear.” \nEric “Critt” Crittenden has over 25 years as a touring performer under his belt\, sharing the stage with the likes of Bob Weir and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead\, Sinbad the Comedian\, Michael Franti\, G-Love & Special Sauce\, Jefferson Airplane/Starship\, Dirty Dozen Brass Band\, and so many more. \nSince his birth in Buffalo\, NY\, Eric has been immersed in the funk and feel-good soul sound of Motown. (After all\, his father played with James Brown for 13 years.) But it was in his twenties that he really discovered the organic self expression of jazz\, listening to Eddie Harris\, John Coltrane\, and Herbie Hancock. Branching further out into rock\, including the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd\, completely changed his life and started him on a path to genre mixing that was accessible to everyone. “For me\, in order to go forward\, you have to go back\,” says Eric. “I was raised with old school R&B and soul. This is who and what I am all about. But this is a new era\, and music needs evolution. I’m fortunate to be able to do my part.” \nAs a highly respected music educator\, he has conducted over a hundred master classes and edutainment performances\, and has been a key force behind numerous arts education efforts in Buffalo and Western New York\, including The IMAGE Urban Arts Workshop (co-sponsored by New Era Cap)\, the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (where he served as Arts Director)\, and his music camp program “Future Sounds of Buffalo.” Today\, he teaches music in the public school system of Buffalo\, NY\, where he continues to perform and dedicate his career to the local music scene and the youth in the community. \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. Through The Big Easy in Buffalo thousands of students\, dozens of local bands\, and countless audience members in Western New York have been exposed to this unique American culture. The Big Easy in Buffalo is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Hochul and the NYS Legislature\, Erie County\, buffalo.fm\, Goldfarb Financial\, National Fuel Gas Co.\, and The Cave.

DESCRIPTION:Buckwheat Zydeco\, Jr. wsg. Ten Cent Howl – The Big Easy in Buffalo NOLA Series\nSportsmen’s Tavern\nThursday September 4\, 5pm doors\, 7pm show\n$15 advance; $20 day-of\nhttps://www.showclix.com/event/buckwheat-zydeco-jr-wsg-ten-cent-howl \nBuckwheat Zydeco Jr.’s story is one of musical inheritance\, hard work\, and dedication to preserving the spirit of zydeco music. From a young boy learning the craft of music by ear\, to becoming a Grammy-winning artist\, he continues to make his mark on the world stage. With his band and his son by his side\, he is ensuring that zydeco music will continue to inspire and uplift audiences for generations to come. Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. was born into a musical family in Lafayette\, Louisiana\, a city deeply rooted in the sounds of zydeco and Creole culture. His father\, Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural\, Sr.\, was a legendary figure in zydeco music\, and Buckwheat\, Jr. was immersed in music from a young age. \nFollowing the death of his father in 2016\, Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. assumed the mantle of his father’s musical legacy\, continuing to lead the Ils Sont Partis Band. This band\, which was originally formed by Stanley Dural\, Sr.\, is a tribute to the vibrant tradition of zydeco and remains a vital force in spreading the genre’s infectious rhythms worldwide. Buckwheat\, Jr. now performs with his father’s iconic custom monogrammed accordion and shares the stage with his son\, Kyle Anthony Dural\, who plays the rubboard. This family connection is deeply meaningful to Buckwheat\, Jr.\, who reflects\, “Everywhere I go\, my son is on my right. It really is a blessing.” \nBuckwheat Zydeco Jr.’s career has been marked by significant milestones\, both alongside his father and as a solo artist. He shared the stage with some of the most renowned figures in music\, including Eric Clapton\, Paul Simon\, Willie Nelson\, Mavis Staples\, Albert Collins\, Buddy Guy\, Dwight Yoakam\, and Los Lobos\, to name a few. Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. and The Ils Sont Partis Band won the 2024 Best Regional Roots Music Album – New Beginnings award at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards\, and also in 2024 got inducted at the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. \nTen Cent Howl has been making waves in the Buffalo Americana scene for over two decades with their original music. The Howl is known for their riveting original songs as well as their extensive catalogue of cover songs ranging from folk to roots to country to classic rock. Ten Cent Howl can make you dance\, sing\, laugh and cry with their tremendous musicianship\, craftsmanship\, and harmony. “Sounding like they come from a simpler time\, unspoiled by the marvels of modern technology\, Ten Cent Howl offers a refreshing glimpse into rural American living through their vacillatingly uplifting and melancholy songs\, many of which are about love lost and found.” – Amy Lieberman – NYSMusic.com \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low-cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. Through The Big Easy in Buffalo thousands of students\, dozens of local bands\, and countless audience members in Western New York have been exposed to this unique American culture. The Big Easy in Buffalo is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Hochul and the NYS Legislature\, Erie County\, buffalo.fm\, Goldfarb Financial\, National Fuel Gas Co.\, Dick & Jenny’s\, and Sportsmen’s Tavern.
